Eco-Friendly 'Not Pocket-Friendly'

16 September 2008

Purchasing an environmentally friendly vehicle can be a costly choice, it has been asserted.

Those seeking unsecured loans to fund such an investment may be interested to hear research by moneysupermarket.com has revealed that insuring a green motor - such as a hybrid - may be more expensive.

The findings follow reports the government has implemented new measures to aid motorists in saving fuel and cutting down on their emissions.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at the price comparison website, acknowledged that the plans could "only be a good thing".

"For those drivers that want to go even further in their quest to help the environment and go green, I can only applaud them, but [I] advise motorists not to assume eco-friendly car insurance is the best place to start," he added.

Mr. Gerrard explained that some companies offered a scheme whereby the money saved was given directly to green causes and charities.

Environmentally conscious individuals seeking unsecured loans may also be interested to note that the Sponge Sustainability Network revealed last January that 52 per cent of people were prepared to pay more for housing that met eco-standards.
